Can you refer me to a good debt counseling company?
Q. Can you refer me to a good debt counseling company? I have heard there are a lot of rip off debt consolidation companies out there, and I am just looking for one that maybe you have had a good experience with. If you could give me some suggestions, that would be great! Thank you!

A. There ARE scams out there. I have used Consumer Credit Counseling Services and highly recommend them. It's a program so you've got to be willing to work with them so they can work with you. It's not going to be easy but will work to get you out of debt. The rip-offs are the plans that promise you all kinds of great things. Run, don't walk, out of thier offices. Below is the link to the agency that governs legitimate counseling programs... start there for a referral:

A. Choose an agency that is accredited by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. They are all legitimate agencies. To find an accredited consumer credit counseling firm, contact the NFCC at 1-800-388-2227 or visit their website at www.nfcc.org. They can counsel you, educate you, set up a debt management plan for you so that you can make one payment instead of several, and possibly negotiate lower interest rates with some or all of your creditors. Watch out for the for-profit debt consolidation firms. They often charge huge fees and then they don't pay your creditors.

A. If you're working with a consumer credit counseling service, it will usually state under the accounts that are being paid for through them, "account being managed by a credit counseling service". Though it may stop someone from getting new credit, or extending old credit, it keeps payments up to date, which actually improves your credit score. The important thing to note is that the fact that you were with the service will fall off your credit file when you finish the program, and no one can tell you were in counseling unless you tell them.

Q. I am about 8 grand in debt, and need to pull myself out asap. Anyone have any ideas? Do debt counselors or debt relief companies really help?

A. Don't use them, for one most of them are a scam, for two, if you go into consumer credit card counseling it reports on your credit, and some lenders think negatively of it. First things first, you obviously need a budget, stick to it, pay off as much as you can off, I'm sure you're getting hit with huge interest rates, you can look into consolidation but, alot of credit card companies offer 0% for the first 12 months, but make sure you know what it is after the 12 months!!! Other than that budget yourself according to your income and stick to it, most of those companies are scams so stay away if at all possible!

A. Please do not do "credit counseling", "debt reduction", or "debt consolidation". It will show up on your credit report like a bankruptcy. It is also not free. There is a charge for the company to do it, they will negotiate with the creditors to either take less than you owe (another "ding" on the credit report), or to space the payments out for a longer period (which will cost you more in interest payments), and it will just take longer for you to get out of debt. Here is a plan that will get you out of debt and allow you to never worry about money again. You just have to decide to do it. If you work the plan, the plan will work for you. Get all of the debt paid off as soon as possible, that will enable you to start building real… [cont.]

Are there any legitimate companies that can help you with debt consolidation?
Q. My husband and I have about $23,000 in debt and are considering going to one of the many debt counseling companies that we see advertised. Can they really help by working with the credit card companies ? Also do they all charge a fee and how do they work? Refinancing our home is currently not a option.

A. There is only 1 that I would recommend and that's Consumer Credit Counseling Services they are the largest and oldest non-profit credit counseling service in the nation and have offices in most major cities. They will lower both your interest rate and monthly payments, I used them several years ago and was debt free in 36-months. There number is 1-800-388-2227.

A. Good Morning =) Depending on your assets(house/car/bank accounts) you may be able to get all of your unsecured(credit card) debt discharged(forgiven) by filing chapter 7 bankruptcy. Consumer Credit Counseling Service(MMI) helped my sister figure out that bankruptcy was her only option and MMI has been approved by the Executive Office for U.S. Trustees to issue counseling certificates in compliance with the bankruptcy code(needed for court.) They only charged a fifty dollar fee total to counsel her, give her the needed certification for court and also the follow up paperwork she had to have for her bills to be discharged. To find out what your options are, call or fill out the form online by following the link below. Best of Luck to… [cont.]

does anyone know of a good non-profit debt counseling service?
Q. I am looking for a way to get a handle on my debt. I have explored a few different options, but my credit is too bad to get any type of loan. I just got a "quote" from a debt relief company to help resolve my issues, but I am a little wary because I have heard a lot of bad things about these companies. Is there anyone who is currently (or in the past) worked successfully with a non-profit debt counseling service? If so, who was it and how was your experience? Any other advice that can be offered is greatly appreciated.

A. CCCS (Consumer Credit Counseling Service) is a non-profit service that is partially funded by the credit card industry. They can put you on a payment plan and reduce or even eliminate interest...They require you to cut up your cards. Note: They DO NOT negotiate settlements...just reduced interest payment. FYI: If you go on their debt program, this will be noted on your credit files and getting any mortgage or car loans will be difficult or impossible while on their program. stay away form any debt counseling service you see advertised on TV...regardless of how nice their "feel good" ads seem.

A. There is nothing they are going to do that you can't do yourself. Look up your specific issues on-line, learn, and apply the lessons to your issues. When you get involved with these groups, there are hidden fees and costs, such as interest charged for longer length loans. Read this: Here's another example, this one involving debt settlement. Let's say you have racked up $20,000 in unsecured credit card debts. You owe $10,000 to one credit card company, $7,000 to another one, and $3,000 to a third one. You agree to contract for a five year debt settlement plan where you pay $250 a month to the settlement company. Sounds good, right? After all, $250 a month for five years is only $15,000, so you're saving $5,000 and you'll be debt-free… [cont.]

A. 99.99 percent of those debt counseling places are SCAMS! They screw desperate people out of their money, by in effect lying to them! You need NO specialized training to be a con man, only a willness to follow the con. If you want to work for those clowns then go to their many websites and apply. My personal favorites are the ones who pretend to be Christian. They say all the same things as the others, only they mention God every now and then. LOL! At the end of the day you'll end up paying these "non profit," "Christian" companies at least $1,000 and probably a lot more.

A. Freedom financial is a good company, but i would suggest calling you're creditors and trying to get on a program with them. Not only do they give their customer better deals then they would ever give a cccs company, but it won't destroy you're credit the ways cccs does either.

reducing credit card debt?
Q. I nearly consolidated my credit cards debts with a debt counseling company that had a monthly charge. my mother, however, told me that there are free services to reduce debt that can even talk down the amount you owe with creditors? where do I find these services?
Asked by texan - Sat Aug 25 23:41:18 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. yea, but you can do that too. what they do is not pay your creditors for months and then try to get them to settle for less. If thats the route you have to take then just do it yourself and save the fees they charge and put it on the debt. Remember that if you go with some company to do this for you and they dont pay your creditors then you are still responsible for the debt not the company that is handling it for you. Your creditors will sue you not them.

Asked by E-65 - Wed Jul 11 07:45:09 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can contact all Banks directly and arrange for an instalment plan with lower interest rate. I used to have S$60,000 CC debt as well. I called up all Banks to cancel all my CC and requested for an instalment plan. Most allow me to pay by instalment with a lower interest rate. But local Banks like DBS & UOB are quite stubborn, where they continues to charge me the usual interest rate. Thus, I called them for a conposite full settlement after I got my bonus. I managed to clear off my debt in 2 years. Of course, if you are not good in negotiate with the Banks, you can also seek Credit Counselling Singapore for assistant.

Is there any way to consolidate debt without going through one of those bogus companies?
Q. I have a lot of credit card debt but half of it is interest. I had a lot of financial troubles over the last two years and had to stop paying all of them completely. I am finally in a place where I can start making minimum payments and try to rebuild my credit again. Have you missed the last four payments with any of them? If your answer is yes, go from the smallest to the largest. IE you owe Acme $100 asked them if they will settle the debt for $35? If they say yes tell them to send that to you in writing. DO NOT give them access to your bank account for payment they will go in there and empty your checking account.
